a photographer’s styling guide

I can’t wait for my autumnal photoshoots! Looking at the beautiful spots I picked, I felt inspired to write a small guide on what to wear for your family photoshoot.

Don’t get me wrong... I’m not saying “go buy new clothes”, but if you need a little inspiration and my perspective as a photographer, well… here it is.

I’m always wondering “What should I wear?” myself, and that’s exactly why I thought this short article might be useful.

Outfits can completely change the mood and feeling of your images. The right clothes don’t just look good — they help you feel confident and comfortable.

Here’s my guide to help you choose the perfect outfits for your family photoshoot.

1. Think in color tones, not matching outfits

Choose a color palette of 3–4 tones that go well together — like beige, cream, olive, and soft rust for autumn, or pastels and denim for spring.

Just think how neutrals photograph beautifully against Vienna’s architecture and gardens, from the soft yellows of Schönbrunn to the marble tones of Belvedere.

2. Choose comfort over perfection

Vienna’s weather can surprise you… sunny one minute, windy the next.

Pick outfits that let you move, sit, hug, and play without worrying about wrinkles or discomfort. Flowing dresses, linen shirts, or soft knits always photograph beautifully.

For kids, avoid itchy fabrics or stiff collars, because you want your kids to feel comfortable, not to be grumpy because they don’t like their clothes.

3. Avoid distracting patterns & big logos

Busy prints, stripes or bold brand logos can pull attention away from your faces. And we don’t want that.

Instead, go for textures (linen, wool, embroidery) and subtle prints like small florals or checks.

If you love dark colors, combine them with a lighter piece. For example, dad in a black sweater and beige trousers, mom in a cream dress. Contrast brings balance.

4. Layers & accessories make magic

A soft cardigan, a hat, a cozy scarf… these little layers add personality and depth.

Vienna’s seasons give you the perfect excuse to play with layers:

Autumn: cardigans, boots, and warm textures.

Spring: light jackets and florals.

Winter: elegant coats, gloves, and even a blanket for cozy shots.

5. Outfit inspiration

To make things easier, I’ve created a Pinterest board with family outfit ideas that fit my photography style. I love cozy and natural vibes.

These looks aren’t about copying exact outfits, but about understanding what colors and textures photograph well together.

6. Let your personal style shine

Ultimately, your family photos are about *you*.

Don’t stress about perfection… choose outfits that reflect your personality. If your child insists on wearing their favorite hat or shoes, that’s part of your story too.

The most memorable photos are the ones where everyone feels comfortable, connected, and present.

My final thoughts

Whether we’re shooting in Schönbrunn’s golden gardens, along the quiet paths of Augarten, or near Vienna’s cobblestone streets, your outfit choices help set the tone for the memories we’ll create together.

I advise to keep it simple, coordinated, and true to who you are. And trust me, your photos will turn out even more beautiful than you imagine.
